Herndon completes housing study, adopts interim policy and begins community‑fund awards process

Mayor Kevin LeBlanc said the interim policy was "unanimously adopted" and relies on Fairfax County and its housing authority to provide technical expertise while the town conducts more detailed area mapping. He said three developments already in the approval pipeline near the metro had been processed prior to the policy and therefore do not include the new affordability components, but that future projects are expected to meet the policy’s expectations.
On distribution of the town’s $200,000 community fund intended for nonprofits and community projects, Town Manager Dan Hoffman said the fund was distributed through an open application that recently closed. Staff are now evaluating applications using council‑approved evaluation criteria; if funds remain after the initial round, the program may reopen early this summer.
LeBlanc said metro and downtown early‑action plans will move faster and Herndon 2050 will fill in mapping for the rest of town in about 18 months, after which zone‑specific affordability requirements will be considered.
