Brooke County Schools honors retiring teachers and student-athletes at regular meeting

The presenter noted Roberta (Roberta/Roberto) Alvarez, hired as a music/chorus teacher and later special education teacher, retired on June 30, 2026; Tammy Cutshall was recognized for more than 32 years of service; Kim Douglas for 24 years; Janice Gable for 53 years; and others who served multiple decades at Brooke County Schools.
The presenter also congratulated athletes: Avery Rado was named West Virginia AAA All-State second team and Jasmine Wood was recognized for OVAC all-star selection and participation in the North–South all-star game. Track athletes were also acknowledged — Marcus Reed was recorded as the Region 1 AAA discus champion with a throw of 144 feet, 1 inch, and Gavin Scott was recognized for an 800-meter time of 1:59.39 and a new school record in the 1,600 of 4:25.02.
One retiree who spoke to the board said the work "wasn't really just a job for me. It was my passion," and thanked colleagues and principals by name for their support. The presenter repeatedly credited retirees with building strong relationships with students and improving school programs, from music classes to science fairs and family engagement nights.
The district asked retirees who were present to come forward for a photograph. Board members offered thanks and best wishes; the President closed the recognitions portion and moved to the business portion of the agenda.
These recognitions were part of the district's standard ceremonial agenda and carried no policy or budgetary actions beyond small tokens of appreciation; personnel items (postings and approvals) were handled later in the meeting.
