Herndon ARB approves brick-clad enclosures to screen EV chargers at 500 Carlisle Drive

The Herndon Architectural Review Board on May 20 approved an application to install exterior screening walls to conceal electric-vehicle charging equipment at 500 Carlisle Drive, the board said at its regular meeting.
Planning staff told the board the proposal calls for two masonry-clad enclosures, each 8 feet tall, positioned on the eastern side of the property and south of the intersection with Eldon Street to screen new EV chargers. Wall widths range from about 11 feet to 25 feet 3 inches, and the applicant plans to match the building’s existing brick veneer and metal coping; the metal access gates would be prefabricated corrugated metal, color-coordinated with the coping, staff said.
“The mechanical screen is matched closely with the design and materials of that adjacent building, and the proposed materials are durable in accordance with the architectural control district criteria,” Miss Jones, the planning staff presenter, told the board.
Jeremy Maloney of Altruistic Design, who identified himself as representing the property owner and design team, said he had no technical questions and thanked staff and the board for their review. “So I appreciate all the attention to detail,” Maloney said.
Staff noted the project proceeded through a minor site-plan review process referenced in the materials (referred to in the staff presentation as “MNP 20 five-ten,” February 2026) and told the board that prior ARB cases involving appurtenances such as water-tower and telecommunications enclosures had led the board to require masonry cladding in similar circumstances.
No members of the public offered comment during the public hearing. Back on the dais, Board Member Miss Boesky moved to approve the draft resolution for ARB26-003; after a second, the clerk called the roll and the board recorded four ayes and adopted the resolution.
