Hope-Page 85 joint committee reviews co-op agreement, athletics participation and facility repairs

The Hope-Page Public School District 85 and Maple River Coop joint committee met March 24 at Hope-Page High School to review the co-op agreement, recap winter sports, discuss student engagement and summer programming, and address facility repairs following recent storm damage.
Clerk read the attendance list and the agenda. The committee placed the CO-OP agreement on the docket for review and asked members to bring recommendations to the June meeting. Present were Cindy Hiam, Eric Parkman, Jonah Wolla, Nathan Hoots, Dustin Theurer, George Richman, Dan Larson, Heidi Kingston, Alli Roller and Brandon Benth.
On athletics, the clerk reported that girls and boys basketball seasons have concluded and that the committee discussed participation in boys basketball at grades 9–12 for next season. For spring sports the clerk reported participation numbers: baseball at 35 students (to field three teams: junior high, junior varsity and varsity), softball at 22 (running a varsity schedule), track participation above 50, and golf estimating 10–12 participants with play to begin in about two weeks. The committee discussed student engagement steps including inviting elementary players to attend varsity practices and the idea of hosting a joint elementary practice at season’s end to strengthen the pipeline to high school teams.
Regarding coaching contracts, the committee decided it will recommend to the board that no board action is necessary on coaching contracts because those agreements are at-will; administration will notify coaches directly. That recommendation is procedural and does not itself change any contract terms.
Committee members discussed summer programming plans: football is considering one or two camps, volleyball will run open gyms, and boys and girls basketball are developing summer programming options. The clerk also listed open coaching positions for 2026–27, including head and assistant roles across volleyball, football, boys and girls basketball, softball, track, and multiple junior-high positions; the clerk noted fall/winter coaching contracts were sent April 15 and are due May 1, while spring sports contracts will be handed out Sept. 15 and due Oct. 1.
On equipment and facilities, the committee reported that storm damage in Hope has required replacement of bleachers and the softball dugout roof. The group said it will seek donations for an additional batting cage; the estimated cost is approximately $13,000. The committee recommended purchasing 30 junior-high basketball uniforms for Fall 2026 and discussed purchasing softball and golf uniforms for Spring 2027 and football uniforms for Fall 2027.
With no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:50 PM. The committee scheduled its next meeting for June 2 at 8:00 AM in Tower City.
