Commissioners authorize up to $14,000 to add sleeping quarters for McCammon ambulance crew

Manning County commissioners voted July 14 to authorize up to $14,000 to remodel sleeping quarters in the McCammon fire station to accommodate full‑time ambulance personnel. The city of McCammon agreed to reimburse $4,000 toward the cost.

The request originated as a presentation from McCammon representatives, who reviewed design options and recommended a four‑bedroom configuration. Dan, the project designer, told commissioners the four‑bedroom option had a “not to exceed 14” estimate and that the most expensive items would likely be the doors, with HVAC and electrical work contracted separately. “Not to exceed $14,000,” Dan said, summarizing the estimate for the four‑bed layout.

Commissioners discussed an alternate three‑room plan estimated near $10,000 and whether volunteers could provide in‑kind labor to reduce expenses. One commissioner noted that the three rooms would cover ambulance needs but the four‑room plan provides added flexibility for volunteers. County staff said roughly $12,000 remained in the capital reallocation from the prior week and that the ambulance district could cover additional costs or be reimbursed.

The board voted to authorize Dan and county crews, in cooperation with the city of McCammon, to proceed with the bedroom adjustments up to $14,000, with the city reimbursing $4,000. Commissioners also directed staff to work on a memorandum of understanding to define permitted uses for the rooms (sleeping/rest only was emphasized) and to clarify responsibilities for furniture and volunteer use.

The motion was made by a commissioner and carried with ayes voiced; no opposition was recorded during the meeting. The project is expected to proceed this year subject to final budgeting and the MOU that staff will draft.
