County approves fleet and heavy-equipment purchases for road and jail transport operations

Montrose County's public works staff presented and the board approved a series of budgeted purchases April 16 to refresh fleet and heavy equipment. Fleet manager Rick Emerson outlined purchase of a 2025 Ford Expedition (state bid) for the sheriff’s transport unit at $57,000 to replace an older caravan used for long-distance prisoner transport. Interim Public Works Director Brandon Wallace presented multiple items for Road and Bridge: water hauling trailers (2026 Dragon 130 BBL units) to support West End operations, additional trailers for magnesium chloride hauling on the East End, and heavy lowboy and slide-axle trailers to move equipment. Staff said most items were reviewed in the work session and are in the fleet budget; older units will be disposed of via GovDeals.
Commissioners questioned budget status and procurement details and noted the purchases should enable more in-house work. Motions to approve the listed purchases passed without recorded opposition during the meeting.
