Council approves transfer of police K‑9 Taz, citing $3,000 vendor credit

Frankfort’s city council on a motion approved a resolution authorizing the transfer of police canine “Taz,” and then approved the actual transfer of ownership.

The police department told council members that the vendor—where Taz was purchased—has agreed to take the dog back and provide a $3,000 credit toward the purchase price of a replacement canine if used within 365 days. Police staff presented two documents: a resolution to authorize the transfer and a contract intended to secure the $3,000 credit.

“They have offered, to take, canine Taz, for a credit of $3,000, against the purchase price of a different canine within 365 days,” said the police department representative during the department report. Council member [Council member] moved to adopt Resolution 26‑05, with a colleague seconding the motion; the roll call approved the resolution and then approved the separate motion to transfer ownership.

Council members voted on the resolution and the transfer by roll call, and both actions carried. The department also said the contract will codify the vendor credit so the city can claim the credit when it purchases a replacement canine.

The police report that evening also covered hiring plans and fleet maintenance: one department vehicle, a 2020 Ford Explorer, suffered a major engine failure with an estimated replacement cost of about $10,000; staff recommended cannibalizing parts for use across the fleet rather than replacing the engine.

The council did not identify a date for using the $3,000 credit; the vendor’s 365‑day window is recorded in the contract documents presented to the council. The council did not discuss any alternative disposition for Taz beyond the vendor offer.
