Resident urges limits on fireworks and loud music; Hazen commission to study permitting and enforcement

A visiting resident urged Hazen City leaders to restrict fireworks and loud event music, saying repeated nighttime blasts disrupt sleep for shift workers, veterans and nursing'home residents and pose a potential fire hazard to asphalt roofs.

Mrs. Matheson spoke during public comment and asked the commission to consider limiting fireworks to July 3'5 and imposing decibel or permitting standards for events. "These cannon like blasts that blow you out of your chair ... your sense of peace is totally disrupted," she said, describing personal and community impacts including disturbed sleep for medical personnel and bus drivers and concern for nesting songbirds.

Commissioners agreed the concern deserved attention. Members noted the city's existing noise ordinance defines prohibited noise as sound audible from more than 75 feet, and they discussed how often the rule is enforced and whether a permitting approach for festival music or exemptions would be appropriate. One commissioner suggested holding a focused public input meeting to solicit views specifically about fireworks and loud music.

No ordinance change was adopted at the meeting; the commission asked staff to gather information on permitting practices, enforcement and potential community outreach. The next step is an informational follow'up and possible public meeting to explore options and collect resident input.
