District operations and the superintendent briefed trustees on capital needs and potential funding steps during the July 14 meeting, describing a near-term GEO bond and an engineering recommendation for a waterline connection at Fayette Central.
The director of operations reported that the district expects to bring a GEO bond to the board in August to borrow roughly $1,200,000. Officials said using the bond would allow the district to move certain operations expenditures (for example, track resurfacing, boilers at key buildings, special-education lift buses and restroom remodel pilots) into bond-funded projects, protecting operations cash. Staff explained state law now includes a two-year cooling-off period that can affect timing; they described approaches to structure the borrowing (including a short-term five-year option with front-loaded repayment) to avoid the cooling-off restriction if needed.
Superintendent and staff also discussed an engineering firm’s assessment of a recommended project to connect Fayette Central to a municipal water line off Highway 1. The presentation referenced a multi‑million‑dollar recommended project and said Congressman Shreve’s office submitted approximately $1.15 million in funding support for the connection; district officials said there remains a funding gap and that engineering findings will be presented at the August meeting.
District leaders emphasized that federal or congressional funding is not guaranteed and that staff are still identifying options to cover the remaining costs if the congressionally-sourced funds are approved. Trustees were told the district will bring full project descriptions to the board and will follow statutory procedures for any bond work that comes back for approval.
What’s next: the district will present the GEO bond project paperwork in August and will host the engineering firm to present findings on the Fayette Central waterline connection at the next board meeting.
