Sheriff and local fire district report July calls: deputies note narcotics-related incidents; fire district seeks volunteers

Sheriff Keller and a Southern Valley Fire representative updated the council on public-safety activity for the recent reporting period.
Keller said July was one of the busier months and summarized disturbance and narcotics-related calls. He said one incident involved methamphetamine found at a gas-station bathroom and that several other calls involved repeat reporting by the same person. Keller said deputies refer narcotics investigations to the regional narcotics task force and that building a prosecutable case can take time.
Keller also described animal-control protocols (verbal warnings, written warnings, then citations; repeated citations within a year become misdemeanors requiring court) and encouraged residents to report concerns so deputies can document and track incidents.
Southern Valley Fire representative Chris told the council the department handled 10 calls in Horace (six EMS calls), reported an average turnout time of 3 minutes, 27 seconds, and said the department is recruiting volunteers and planning community events with proceeds benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Council members thanked both agencies for the reports; no formal action was taken.
