Council amends chicken ordinance to raise coop height to 7 feet

The Horace City Council voted on Sept. 2 to approve the second reading of a proposed chicken ordinance with one amendment: increasing the coop‑height requirement from 6 feet to 7 feet.
Lucas (staff) introduced the item and recounted that staff had not received suggested wording changes submitted by a resident after the first reading. Resident Blake Corcoran told the council that many prebuilt coops sold in retail kits are taller than 6 feet and urged flexibility. “If you look online, some of the pre bought coops…it’s hard to try to meet that size requirement,” Corcoran said.
Councilmember (voice) moved to accept the second reading with the modification to raise the height to 7 feet and a colleague seconded the motion; the council approved it by voice vote.
What changed: The ordinance’s coop‑height standard was increased to 7 feet; staff said other technical clarifications (for predator resistance and ground‑clearance definitions) can be handled by inspection guidance or a future amendment.
The council closed discussion and carried the motion; staff said further edits could be made later if needed.
