Board approves SRO memorandum of agreement and designates officers as school officials

The Grand Forks School Board on July 13 approved a memorandum of agreement for school resource officer (SRO) services for the 2026–27 school year that the administration said will cost the district $214,055.23 and includes a $6,048.48 increase from last year.
Dr. Arison, presenting the memorandum, said the agreement covers placement of SROs at secondary schools, oversight by an SRO sergeant for training and consistency, and contingency coverage for SRO absences. "Having a SRO at each secondary school continues to have a dramatic proactive and positive effect on school climate, safety, and youth-centered community resource collaboration," Dr. Arison said.
The memorandum names the police department as the partner agency and asks the board to designate SROs as school officials so they may access personally identifiable student information when appropriate. Board members asked clarifying questions about coverage, whether community high school would have a full-time SRO (the administration said that school would be covered by shared SRO resources as needed), and how summer-school coverage will be handled.
The board voted unanimously to approve the MOU, authorize the superintendent to sign, and designate SROs as school officials with access to records when required for legitimate duties. The administration said the contract increase reflects officer salary and health-insurance adjustments and includes summer school compensation.
The action was recorded as an approval by roll call; no board member opposed.
