Engineer reports ADA ramp completion, urges county follow-up on crosswalks; contractor DLS criticized

Borough engineer Tom reported that ADA-compliant ramps on Central Avenue have been completed and that the next step is county installation of crosswalk markings and warning signage. "The new ramps are obvious, so it's gonna go... the next step would be to get the county to put the crosswalks in and the typical warning signs on either side," Tom said.
Tom also reported that the borough’s paving contractor, DLS, was in town to finish punch-list items so that the contract can be closed. Several council members said the borough had experienced logistical problems with DLS on prior projects; Tom acknowledged the issues and said he will follow up with the county and contractor.
Council members focused on safety at a location near the Exxon station where children are frequently dropped off: they asked whether the new ramps and curb work include a marked crosswalk and safe pedestrian routing. Tom said the county specifies what it will stripe and that the borough must implement and pay for sidewalks or other elements beyond the county's lane-to-lane responsibilities. He said some ramp and curb work remained incomplete on that corridor because the contractor missed items on the punch list.
Why it matters: councilors said the Exxon station crossing is used for school pickup/drop-off and that inconsistent ramp/striping work can leave pedestrians crossing an unmarked, wide turning lane. Members discussed asking the schools to adjust pickup locations while the borough and county finish construction work.
