The Ames City Council handled a series of routine but consequential items on July 14.
Land use: The council approved a preliminary plat for 5128 Tabor Drive (five single‑family lots) contingent on proof that the 10% open‑space requirement will be satisfied by joining the Sunset Ridge homeowners association or by dedicating an outlot.
Grants and contracts: Council approved six downtown façade grants (five maintenance grants and one traditional grant) with a staff‑requested condition that a proposed door be recessed to avoid opening into the right‑of‑way. The council also awarded a contract to De Novo for advisory construction services to help reduce change‑order risk and assist in design‑phase reviews.
Infrastructure: The council opened and closed public hearings for the 2025–2026 CDBG water system improvement project and for 2026–2027 airport airside improvements, accepted bids, and authorized moving forward.
Ordinances and procedural items: Council conducted readings and adopted an ordinance changing the city assessor’s term of office (Ordinance No. 4599) and handled several zoning text amendments and overlay amendments on second reading.
Litigation and settlement: After a closed session under Iowa law to discuss pending litigation, the council approved a settlement with Lisonebee Southern in the amount of $75,000 by roll call.
What’s next: Staff will follow through on recording the easement instruments for the conveyance/plat decision, process the QuikTrip special‑use and other permit applications, implement the façade grant conditions during project review, and execute the De Novo contract for advisory services.
