Barnes County North board approves policy updates, a CD reinvestment and other routine actions

At the Oct. 15 meeting the Barnes County North School Board approved a set of routine administrative and policy actions and handled several operational items.
The board voted to amend the early-graduation policy (GDAA) to remove a junior-year restriction and clarified that recommendations are made by the principal after consultation with the student, parent and counselor and approved or denied by the superintendent. The board also approved updates to the nondiscrimination and anti-harassment policy (AAC) to add contact e-mail addresses and identify the building contact for Title IX and Section 504 inquiries.
The board adopted NDHSAA-aligned language for sportsmanship and spectator ejection (policy BDA), clarifying that game officials initiate ejections, host management notifies the district and that consequences can apply to the next contests in the same sport; the board approved this change on first reading and waived a second reading to expedite adoption.
Other actions included:
- Reaffirming the FDA policy on education of homeschooled students (no changes). - Authorizing staff to submit claims for small unclaimed-property items discovered in the district's name (EcoATM LLC and O'Reilly Auto Enterprises items reported); the board authorized Lindsay to file the claims. - Approving a recommendation to reinvest a maturing certificate of deposit in the general fund for 12 months at 4.1% rather than shorter or longer terms, citing interest-rate expectations. - Changing two late-start professional-development dates (adding Nov. 13 and Dec. 11 and removing the February date) to accommodate Marzano training and emergency-management sessions; the board discussed compensation and negotiation implications for staff.
Several personnel and operational items were reported as information rather than formal board action: the superintendent reported two new boys-basketball hires (Dawson Schmidt, head coach; Tanishi Kapaun, assistant) and the activities director and superintendent said they would pursue outreach to Valley City regarding a potential emergency football co-op (administrative follow-up required). The board voted to move its November meeting from Nov. 13 to Nov. 6 at 7:00 p.m. so the superintendent evaluation (split into two five-topic blocks) can meet Century Code deadlines.
The meeting adjourned with the board asking administrators to report back on the Valley City outreach and the superintendent evaluation schedule.
