Carlisle Cemetery Committee to seek RFQ for Green Cemetery expansion; unanimously appoints new member

The Carlisle Cemetery Committee on May 20 confirmed plans to solicit a request for qualifications to study the Leavitt land for a possible expansion of Green Cemetery after Town Meeting approved funding on May 18.
Gretchen Gallimore, assistant to the town manager, said she will send the RFQ to several vendors and will forward a draft to the Select Board for authorization. Chairman Gordon Means said he will provide the proposal language, and James Hall, DPW superintendent, said he will identify additional firms and oversee the project; the committee aims to have the RFQ released July 1.
The committee also noted that Town Meeting approved an increase in cemetery fees to support upkeep. Following that approval, Hall said the department will order a new backhoe immediately to support maintenance work.
The group addressed several operational items: after a recent inspection, Means and committee member Susan Richardson concluded the furnishings and chairs in Wilson Chapel should be wiped down with alcohol wipes ahead of the Old Home Day open house; Richardson, Maeve Lobo and Means will meet the morning of June 17 to do the work. Lobo said she expects to finish additions to the cemetery brochure by June 3. Gretchen Gallimore reminded members that street signs cannot be ordered until the committee finalizes a list of pathways and names after working with CIMS.
The committee interviewed Rebecca Madden Sturges as a prospective member. Sturges said she wanted to see the committee’s work and learn more about town operations. Committee members voted unanimously to add Rebecca Madden Sturges; her term will end in 2029. The committee recorded members’ other term expirations as Maeve 2027, Gordon 2028 and Susan 2028.
Chairman Means reported that Scott Davis has retired as captain of the Carlisle Minutemen and will be honored with a proclamation and a poem on Memorial Day at 9:00 a.m. The meeting was adjourned at 11:10 a.m.
