Kenly council hires local CPA to address three years of missing audits, cancels existing contract

Interim Town Manager Tony Sears told the Council the town is three years behind on annual audits and presented two proposals to bring FY22–FY24 statements current.
The Council voted to accept a proposal from Beverly Stroud (now an independent CPA) at $64,250, which staff said offered familiarity with the town's accounting system and a smaller, personalized team. Council members noted GWI (formerly the Isley Group) also submitted a proposal at $90,000 and could handle the work with more staff capacity, but staff recommended Stroud for cost and fit.
Council also voted to terminate the town's existing contract with Anthony Tabb, citing a lack of communication and progress; staff will request all completed work and outstanding invoices be delivered to the town. Both actions were approved unanimously, 3-0 (motion to accept Beverly Stroud's bid by Council Member Keith Davis; motion to cancel the contract with Anthony Tabb by Council Member Garrett Stancil).
Council directed staff to begin the onboarding and document transfer process with Stroud so financial statements and audits can proceed in sequence as required by the Local Government Commission.
