North East reports on water‑plant upgrades, Duie Pyle commerce‑center pre‑construction and spring community events

Water Superintendent Ron Carter entered the February 2025 monthly reports for the Leslie and Rolling Mill plants and said a pre‑construction meeting with the Maryland Department of the Environment, the town engineer and staff was scheduled for March 27, 2025 about Powder Activated Carbon rooms at both treatment plants. Town Administrator Melissa Cook‑MacKenzie reported a pre‑construction meeting with A. Duie Pyle for the North East Commerce Center (Lums Road) and described work on Turner Park phase one requirements with consultant McCrone staff.
Assistant Town Administrator Grant Handley said crews are working to get cameras operational at the Leslie Water Treatment Plant, that the town completed an inventory of roads and sidewalks to plan repairs, and that staff are consolidating and updating park signage. Director of Planning and Zoning Betsy Vennell said ENERWA (Elk and North East Rivers Watershed Association) is finalizing a county report card planned for distribution in May 2025 (dependent on funding) and announced Project Clean Stream on April 5 at 9:00 a.m. near Stony Run and Gilpin Falls.
Community items included the Town Easter 'Eggstravaganza' scheduled for April 12, 2025 at North East Elementary School and reminders about a public meeting on April 29, 2025 with Maryland State Highway about the Route 272 Corridor Study. During public comment, residents from the North East Isles thanked town staff for engagement and police Sergeant Michael Hickey was thanked for returning a stolen bicycle to a resident.
