Board adopts student-drafted mission in athletics and activities code; members urge stronger activity representation

The Monona Grove School Board unanimously approved updates to the district’s athletics and activities code for the 2026–27 school year after a discussion about student voice and whether the document adequately represents non-athletic extracurriculars.
Joe, who presented the code, said the changes are largely clarifications and the addition of a mission and vision developed by student leaders this past year. He described the new student-athlete leadership team and said the administration expects to open an application this week. “The additions that you see in the code are the mission and vision that’s been developed by student leaders,” he said, noting the changes also clarify how participation fees are assessed.
Board members praised the student leadership work but several — including Janice — said the mission and pillars read heavily toward athletics and asked how activities such as orchestra, DECA and show choir would be represented. Joe said students in all programs were surveyed and that activity advisors had opportunities to provide feedback, but he acknowledged time constraints among activity advisors and said the district could explore separate activity-specific language or documents if there is appetite and capacity.
The board approved the code by roll-call vote and asked staff to continue outreach to activity leaders so the code better reflects the full range of extracurriculars.
