North Cape School Board approves routine financial items, accepts $4,400 digital mapping grant

The North Cape School District Board of Education met Dec. 18 in Franksville and approved routine business items while hearing updates on school activities and facilities.
Board member Dan Hying called the meeting to order at 5:02 p.m. The board unanimously approved the Nov. 20, 2023 meeting minutes on a motion by Ryan Menken and second by Keith Jacobson. The board then approved the district financial report, presented by Treasurer Tom Halter, on a motion by Tom Henningfeld and seconded by Halter. Later the payroll and disbursement checks — including a large payment to WEC and items related to special-education busing — were approved on a motion by Ryan Menken and a second from Keith Jacobson.
In a staff update labeled "Good News," Mrs. Bauer and Ms. Witzeling highlighted recent school activities: Mrs. Thomas is coaching the boys basketball team, which has already recorded several wins; the Scholastic Book Fair proved successful and was extended to coincide with a rescheduled concert; and Leaders in Action ran a food drive and bake sale that collected 225 items, $243 from the bake sale and $577 in donations.
Ms. Witzeling announced she applied for and secured a Digital Mapping grant of $4,400 that the district will use to provide a digital map of the school for law enforcement and the fire department to use in an emergency. The board also heard that a Character Education assembly featured class presentations and a 5th-grade kindness challenge; keychains will be awarded to participants who complete the challenge.
Under old business the board discussed a safety concern at the front entrance: an uneven concrete area currently marked with cones that staff identified as a fall risk and plan to repair in spring. Ryan Menken also noted a crack at the west end of the gym floor that referees have mentioned; the board indicated that more substantial gym repairs would be considered for summer work plans.
Superintendent Dr. Lehnen reported that board member Keith Jacobson will be recognized for 40 years of service at the Wisconsin Association of School Boards conference Jan. 17–19; Jacobson confirmed he will attend. With no new business, the board adjourned at 5:21 p.m. on a motion by Menken and a second from Henningfeld.
