Committee approves five Aurora appointees to the regional convention and visitors bureau

The Rules, Administration and Procedure Committee approved resolution 26-0405 on July 7, 2026, appointing five Aurora nominees and reappointing one member to the Aurora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (AACVB).
Nicholas R. Thompson, deputy chief of staff for the mayor’s office, explained the bureau is a private nonprofit regional organization with 11 positions that represent several municipalities in the region. He said Aurora has three consistent municipal appointments on the AACVB and that other communities (including Batavia, Big Rock, Hinkley, Montgomery, North Aurora, Oswego, Plano, Sugar Grove and Yorkville) also have appointment rights or that certain partner organizations hold standing seats, such as the Fox Valley Park District.
Committee members asked whether Aurora-appointed members could live outside the city and still be appointed; Thompson said the mayor selected nominees who work on projects rooted in Aurora and have business interests in the city, and that external residency does not automatically disqualify a candidate if their work benefits Aurora.
Committee members also questioned the legislative language describing “one municipal representative and 10 at‑large appointments” and asked staff to verify the text; Thompson said he would check the code language and provide clarifying material if needed. The committee approved the appointments by voice vote, 3-0.
Staff said one remaining AACVB seat will be deliberately left open while the mayor’s office solicits other candidates from aldermanic offices.
