Committee approves seven new appointments and one reappointment to Aurora Youth Council

The Rules, Administration and Procedure Committee approved resolution 26-0404 on July 7, 2026, appointing seven new members and reappointing one member to the Aurora Youth Council to fill vacancies left by graduating seniors.
Simon Rodriguez, Youth Services Manager, told the committee the Youth Council has 17 total seats, with the four largest high schools (East Aurora, West Aurora, Metea Valley and Waubonsee Valley) allotted two seats each and most other participating schools allotted one seat. Rodriguez said the program prefers underclassmen so members can serve multiple years and described outreach and interview procedures for applicants.
Committee members asked about school representation and whether new applicants are considered when an incumbent is up for reappointment; Rodriguez said incumbents are typically offered reappointment first but new applicants are still considered and interviewed as vacancies arise. He said the department notifies applicants when no vacancy exists and will inform them when openings appear.
Nicholas R. Thompson, deputy chief of staff for the mayor’s office, and committee members discussed the distribution of Aurora residents within those schools; the committee requested a breakdown of how many students at the four largest schools are Aurora residents and what percentage that represents so members can validate seat allocations.
Chair recorded the motion to approve the appointments and the committee voted 3-0 to approve the resolution.
The appointments are to be forwarded for committee-of-the-whole and council consideration as part of the normal appointments process; staff will provide the requested residency breakdown to the committee.
