City seeks council consensus on Patton Park pool rebuild and YMCA partnership possibilities

City staff recommended on Nov. 6 that the council give general direction to redesign Patton Pool and the Patton Park area to improve resilience and accommodate competitive swimming needs while preserving public open-swim elements.
Conant, the city manager (S3), said staff, Mayor Pro Tem and the deputy city manager met with county and YMCA representatives. He summarized staff's concept: reconstruct the existing 50-meter outdoor pool (currently one shallow end limits competition starts) so both ends can be used for competitions, incorporate open-play features and consider an ad-alternate for a covered facility in the future. "We would rebuild it so that both ends could be used for swimming competitions and also include a open swim play element," Conant said.
Mayor Pro Tem (S2) said the YMCA is exploring feasibility for indoor competition pools — including a potential indoor 50-meter facility — and the council heard that a YMCA-led capital campaign could fund a separate indoor pool on the Y's site. Staff asked for general consensus to proceed with preliminary designs and cost estimates; the council agreed to move forward with design work and return with more detailed plans.
