Council reviews farmers market layout, vendor rules and temporary food permits

A council member who is organizing the farmers market described plans for a larger footprint to reduce crowding and to improve vendor spacing. She said she has been contacting vendors via email and Facebook, is increasing the market space and is seeking commitment from vendors for specific dates to avoid last-minute gaps.
She told the council that some food vendors were previously not aware they must collect town food taxes and that the market will require temporary food-establishment permits and, in some cases, water testing. "I have to list the vendors that are going to be at the market...If they're not bringing their own water, I have to do a water test and send it in," she said.
Council members discussed vendor fees and whether to charge an additional fee for the July 4 market, which falls on a Saturday this year. The market organizer reported mixed vendor interest and said some regular vendors may not commit to the full season. She plans to collect single-day fees when needed and will work with the health department on temporary-food requirements.
Staff agreed to support permit processing and to share vendor lists; the council asked the organizer to provide final lists and to consult staff about traffic and road closure timing for market days.
