Board members pressed for consistent cell-phone language across handbooks (elementary through high school) and asked that the definition of the instructional day be explicit so before/after-care and bus time are not ambiguous. They also discussed the handling of smartwatches and emergency medical-device access for students.
Discipline and promotion rules drew robust comment. Members said some proposed language (for example, barring 8th-grade promotion or prom participation for students assigned ISS/OSS) risked being overly punitive; the board asked that language be softened and procedures added (including a parent/student conference) so that principals retain discretion. Administration agreed to remove or reframe language that implied automatic exclusion and to refer to criteria or procedures rather than a standing board policy where appropriate.
Practical implementation items were also fixed: administrators will ensure handbook pages match posted school times, add or correct references to board policy numbers (for dress code, etc.), reconcile PE uniform fees and provide clearer volunteer approval procedures (remove a specific '15 calendar days' statement and instead require volunteers to be approved before participating). Board members additionally requested clarity on how forms (Chromebook agreements, insurance waivers) are collected and stored.
The board voted to approve the handbooks subject to the edits made in the meeting and asked administration to produce updated, hyperlinked versions for the website and updated printable copies for parents.
What happens next: Staff will incorporate the requested wording changes and return polished handbook documents; administration will create consistent web links and a checklist for required parent forms to ensure compliance.
