Onley council sends balanced 2026–27 budget to public hearing, trims real estate tax rate

Salazar said the draft budget is balanced using $16,514 from town reserves and that the proposed real estate tax rate would fall from 6.6 cents to 5.5 cents per $100 of assessed value. She asked if councilmembers were satisfied with the draft and wanted it advertised for public comment; Councilman Rodney Lang moved to send the budget to public hearing, seconded by Woody Zember. On the roll-call vote Councilman Bill Ferguson recorded an abstention; the motion carried.
Council discussion at the meeting touched on reserve use and re-appropriations needed for capital projects the council subsequently approved. The public hearing for the budget will be scheduled according to the town’s statutory and local-public-notice requirements; staff will include the proposed tax-rate change in the hearing materials.
