Albany school budget approved after small stipend amendment

Colleen Cormack introduced an amendment to increase the school board services line by $1,800 — $300 per position for three school-board roles — “for the purposes of directing the school board to revisit stipend amounts and incentivize citizens to fill often vacant roles,” the amendment text stated. "Most of us who have been here year after year, have seen empty ballots for a long time," Cormack said in support of the change.
School administration outlined the year’s primary drivers: implementation of the first year of a new elementary-school contract, higher high-school tuition (an increase the administration said was about $123,000 in the current proposal), special-education tuition rising by roughly $95,000 to cover specialized instruction and paraprofessionals, and an SAU reallocation that moved two positions into the central office. The district also noted a new five-year transportation agreement with Eldridge Transportation.
Moderator and meeting officials read the amendment into the record, members moved and seconded it, and the assembly voted to adopt the amendment before taking the final budget vote. The moderator announced, “Article 5 as amended passes.”
