Plan Commission recommends approval to move historic 'Sheehan House' to 818 S. Madison

The City of Lancaster Plan Commission on Jan. 12 voted 6-0 to recommend that City Council approve a certified survey map allowing Roger Ihm to relocate the historic “Sheehan House” from 402 S. Madison to a replat of Block 71 (new address 818 S. Madison).
During the public hearing, neighbors Traci Kane and Jesse Mergen spoke in opposition to the move. Ihm said the lot is the best available location for the house, that the structure will fit within setbacks, and that moving it will take about two days to prepare and a half-day to transport. He told the commission the hospital that currently owns the building wants it moved by Jan. 31. Ihm said the house will be set on piers and beams at the new site to reduce the amount of concrete required.
The commission’s recommendation came during the review of the certified survey map. Kyle Vesperman moved to recommend approval and Mary Leonard seconded; the motion carried on a 6-0 roll-call vote.
Why it matters: relocating a historic structure changes lot configuration and addresses and requires City Council action on the replat. Neighbors’ opposition and the hospital’s stated timeline were the principal tensions at the hearing.
What happens next: The commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to City Council for a final decision. No council action was recorded at the Jan. 12 meeting.
