Officials raise groundwater and quality concerns over proposed Highway H gravel pit

At the Sept. 4 Lauderdale Lakes meeting, Chairman Jack Sorenson urged district opposition to a proposed gravel pit on Highway H adjacent to lake recharge areas, saying groundwater in the area flows toward the lake and that about 72% of the water feeding the lake is groundwater.
Sorenson said he and Commissioner Dean Bostrom would attend a Sugar Creek town meeting on Sept. 9 to register objections. He listed specific concerns including washing of gravel, reclamation after mining, noise, dust and increased traffic that could affect water quality and shoreline conditions.
The board also discussed other town matters including the Town of LaGrange's planned replacement of the Deacon Island Bridge in October 2022, concerns about large boat wakes (after a sailboat capsized during a race), and plans to restrict road parking near launches and raise boat launch fees next year.
