Mount Vernon — At its July 6 meeting the Mount Vernon City Council approved an expansion of the city’s 2026–2027 employee wellness program and granted a liquor license for the upcoming Heritage Days event.
Staff reported that 13 of 28 full‑time employees participated in the program this year; Council approved adding part‑time employees, volunteer firefighters and reserve officers to the program. The wellness program, administered by Mercy, includes a single membership to the LBC for participating employees. Council members said the program is intended to maintain employee health and may reduce the workers’ compensation Mod Factor, potentially lowering premiums.
Council also approved a liquor license for Heritage Days after staff provided a letter to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division outlining event details, including alcohol sales on designated Uptown streets. Community Development Group (CDG) confirmed it had secured insurance for the event. The motion to approve the liquor license carried with the three attending council members voting yes; Tuerler and Hansen‑Player were absent.
The Council took no additional actions beyond approving the program expansion and the Heritage Days license; the Mayor said he would write a letter of support to Linn County Conservation on a separate trails matter discussed during the meeting.
