Board circulates reserve SRO MOU for review, no vote taken

Trustees reviewed a draft memorandum of understanding to allow a Cascade County Sheriff’s Office reserve deputy to serve as a school resource officer (SRO) in district schools. The item had been moved from the action portion of the agenda to reports earlier in the meeting and was presented for trustees’ review on April 13.
Superintendent Hoyer said the draft reflects months of work with the county sheriff’s office, the city, district lawyers and the board’s safety committee. "We wrote up an MOU and then I think the lawyers got hold of it and we realized it wasn't quite as legal as it probably should have been," Hoyer said, noting the current draft contains statutory (MCA) notations and additional legal subsections.
Hoyer told trustees they would have at least two weeks to review the agreement prior to an open discussion and vote; she also said Great Falls Police leadership will take the draft to city leaders and that the rollout, if approved, would likely begin next fall. The draft will be returned to the board for detailed consideration before any formal approval.
