Clifton holds public information meeting on Phase II of Main Street streetscape

Susan Yantis, chair of Clifton’s Special Projects Committee, and consultants from J2 Engineers and LPDA presented preliminary engineering and design concepts for Phase II of the Main Street streetscape at a public information meeting June 5. The work would cover the historic central business district between Chapel Road and Ford Lane and focuses on improved pedestrian circulation, clearer separation of parking and travel lanes, landscape opportunities and traffic calming.
Consultants Jim Bishoff of J2 Engineers and Zac Lette of LPDA displayed section views, material plans and north/south concept views for the corridor. Materials shown to the council and public emphasized pedestrian visibility and ‘‘calming’’ treatments; the team also described how the design work ties into prior Streetscape Master Plan work and Phase 1 improvements completed in 2015. The presenters noted that exhibits and additional materials are available on the town website.
The project’s funding history was outlined: earlier federal and state transportation enhancement and MAP-21/Transportation Alternatives funds supported prior phases and preliminary engineering; the presentation identified the Streetscape Phase 2 authorization and referenced VDOT-administered grants used for parts of the work. The consultants said VDOT reimbursements have been recorded for Phase 2 activity to date.
No formal action was taken; the session was informational and followed by a question-and-answer period. Town staff said design documents will be distributed to the council as the engineering progresses and that public exhibits remain available online for residents seeking more detail.
