Board cancels trustee election, acclaims three candidates and saves about $70,000

The Great Falls Public Schools Board of Trustees voted March 23 to cancel a scheduled trustee election after the district received the same number of candidates as open seats.
Mr. Deakins explained that because three candidates applied for the three available three‑year board seats, state and local procedures permit canceling the election and declaring the candidates elected by acclamation. He said Cascade County had already posted cancellation and that the district will mirror that action.
Trustee Henning moved to cancel the election and declare Bill Bronson, Kim Skornagoski and Amy Thompson duly elected by acclamation for three‑year terms; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Mr. Deakins told the board the district will save a little over $70,000 compared with running the election, money the district can use for other school‑year needs.
Board members thanked the trustees who filed for re‑election and noted the fiscal and administrative benefits of canceling uncontested elections.
