The Freetown Board of Select voted on July 13 to award the Freetown Elementary School roof replacement contract to Leading Way Construction Inc. for $456,600. The chair noted the town had $500,000 budgeted for the work and that the contract will be phased to avoid disrupting students.
A board member said the town obtained a recommendation letter from the consultant hired to vet bids and confirmed references for the low bidder. “We did get the letter of recommendation from the GRLA that we hired to do this work, and they checked all their references,” a selectman said.
Because the final contract paperwork was still being completed, the board also voted to authorize the town administrator to sign the agreement on behalf of the board after town-counsel review so construction could begin on schedule. The motion passed by voice vote.
Background and next steps: the chair explained the town earmarked $500,000 and will use stabilization funds if change orders or additional work are needed; the town expects the awarded section of the roof to be replaced this summer with minimal impact on students and staff.
