District announces preschool expansion, playground grant and safety walkthroughs

Presenter (S5) said the state increased Overbrook preschool slots to 20 and the district received a capital grant to outfit the classroom and install an ADA-accessible bathroom to enable two preschool classrooms; staff expect the work to be completed before school starts. "We applied for both. We received the capital grant, and we're using that money to outfit the classroom... and adding an ADA accessible bathroom," the presenter said.
Staff also reported the Mamoguan PTA's playground work and that district staff secured grant funding (about $125,000) to purchase a new playground for that school, with delivery and installation targeted before the school year.
On safety, the presenter outlined plans to pair routine fire-marshal walkthroughs with Lodestar (PMA) risk-management reviews to assess OSHA compliance and build a policy for classroom and vendor safety. The district will invite Lodestar to walk buildings with the fire marshal and maintenance staff; the goal is to address fire and OSHA items during summer maintenance and produce a policy for staff and contractors.
Finally, staff described a tattered but functioning fire curtain at Mamoguan discovered during a viral video; community members may fundraise for a replacement and the district will obtain vendor specs and pricing before accepting any donation.
No capital appropriations from operational funds were reported; staff said grants cover the projects and that more details will be provided at an upcoming meeting.
