Board approves payrolls and personnel moves, authorizes bus liquidations and sets tentative last day of instruction

The NICE Community School District Board of Education on May 18 approved routine financial disbursements, multiple personnel actions and several operational measures.
Board member Jim Gray moved — with John Grove supporting — to approve revised General Fund bills for April 20 through May 15, 2026 of $1,182,800.54, April payrolls of $1,325,920.90 and total disbursements of $2,508,721.44. The board also accepted the Treasurer's Reports showing total receipts of $1,596,397.13 and total disbursements of $2,254,808.17, and acknowledged fund balances including a Sinking Fund balance of $745,621.01 and a Capital Projects Fund balance of $241,310.99 for April 30, 2026.
The board approved several personnel actions. Jim Gray moved (supported by John Grove) to hire Nichole Jones as a secondary art teacher; the motion carried. The board also approved hiring Madison Ninko as a teacher and formally acknowledged Patty Luke's letter of retirement and Athletic Director Bobby Zhulkie's letter of resignation; each motion was recorded as carried.
On transportation and assets, Derrick Magnuson moved (supported by John Grove) to liquidate four used buses; the motion carried. Transportation Director Eric Warlin had earlier reported the district was considering liquidation of older vehicles.
The board authorized a resolution to continue participation in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) (motion by Jim Gray, supported by John Grove), and voted to continue using Superior Rehabilitation Services as presented (motion by Jim Gray, supported by John Grove). The board also authorized the district's last day of instruction as Thursday, June 11, unless the state legislature allows for additional forgiven days (motion by Chad Korpi, supported by Jim Gray).
