UW‑Extension hires PFAS specialist, reorganizes AED coverage and raises FY2027 contract fee

Amber Rehberg, Area 4 Extension Director, told the committee UW‑Madison Extension has hired a statewide Emerging Contaminants Specialist within the Natural Resources Institute who will provide educational resources and planning support on PFAS and related issues. Rehberg said the position is intended to support county planning and education rather than conduct direct on‑site remediation.
Rehberg also described a restructuring of AED responsibilities effective June 29 so she can focus on Area 3 (which includes Oneida County); Karly Harrison will cover neighboring service areas and tribal partners to improve capacity. She said discussions with Nicolet College are beginning and coordination meetings will be scheduled when capacity allows.
The committee was told the FY2027 contract fee for the county’s co‑funded UW‑Extension positions (currently 1.7 FTE) will be $50,045, reflecting a 2% increase to cover salary and benefit costs; the figure was presented for advance budget planning. Rehberg highlighted full registration in youth programs such as summer theater and robotics camps and noted Youth in Governance is expanding from a pilot to seven participants.
