Oneida County launches bee‑lawn pilots; Kathan Lake petition nears submission

Baerbel, an LTE with the Land and Water Conservation Department (LWCD), described the bee‑lawn concept promoted by UW‑Minnesota as a turf/pollinator hybrid that supports pollinators while remaining usable for recreation. She said LWCD has a recent County Lake grant that funds up to three bee‑lawn projects in priority watersheds; the first project has been installed in Three Lakes, and the Healing Nature Center demonstration plot established two years ago has inspired homeowner interest. An open house at the Healing Nature Center is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday, June 28.
Michele Sadauskas reported (via Ken Drake, Lake District President) that the Kathan Lake District petition process is progressing: about 60 signatures have been tentatively identified as eligible and 42 signatures have already been returned. The petition is on track for submission to the county in July for initial review.
The committee received LWCD budget and invoices reports for May 2026 and reviewed upcoming LWCD events including DNR PFAS listening sessions and the pollinator habitat tour. The committee also approved forwarding a resolution (with a fiscal impact statement) to the County Board to add a citizen member to the CUW Committee as a non‑consent agenda item.
