Monona County Board approves hiring resolution, sheriff promotions and roughly $110,000 in local funding

At its July 7, 2026 meeting in Onawa, the Monona County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted Resolution No. SR 26-42 to hire Mathew Collett as a full‑time Operator II in Secondary Roads at a starting rate of $27.25 per hour; the resolution conditions permanent seniority on successful completion of a background check, pre‑employment physical and drug screening.
The board also authorized Sheriff Kevin Ewing to advertise for a dispatcher and approved promotion/hire of Ashley Haynes to lead jail/dispatch, increasing her hourly rate from $24.31 to $30.09 effective July 19, 2026. All motions on personnel matters carried on unanimous votes of Supervisors Bo Fox, Tom Brouillette and Vince Phillips.
Supervisors approved claims and approved multiple board appointments and reappointments: John Rasmussen was appointed to the Hungry Canyons Alliance Board; Josh Schaben was appointed to the Loess Hills Development and Conservation Authority Board; Bo Fox, Josh Schaben and Craig Hartman were reappointed to the Missouri River Preservation and Land Use Authority Board; Christine Craig was reappointed to the Veteran Affairs Commission; and Jeff Pithan was appointed Weed Commissioner. The board also approved a General Ledger transfer from General Basic operating transfers to the TIF/Urban Renewal account and acknowledged receipt of a manure management annual update and the Monona County Zoning/Environmental Health quarterly report for April–June 2026.
The board approved funding requests and dues totaling $109,832.15 for local organizations. Major allocations included $25,000 for the Monona County Fair, $21,578 for the Siouxland Regional Transit System, $20,000 for Monona County Economic Development and $17,735 for the Western Iowa Community Improvement Regional Housing Trust Fund. Smaller awards and dues approved included $2,000 to Loess Hills Alliance, $2,000 to the Veterans Memorial Museum, $1,000 each to the Monona County Historical Museum and Family Crisis Centers, $500 to the Monona County Historical Preservation Commission, $3,000 to West Central Community Action, $2,500 to Centers Against Abuse & Sexual Assault (CAASA), $10,000 to Monona County Soil & Water, $2,919.15 in SIMPCO dues, and $300 each for Blencoe and Ute Senior Citizens groups.
Robert Bianchini offered a public comment expressing concern about a lagoon being developed near his property; the board discussed the matter but recorded no follow-up action. The meeting adjourned at 11:35 a.m.
