Committee backs resolution urging county voters to consider sales tax increase in unincorporated areas

Fayette County school leaders voted to forward a resolution urging the County Commission to place an increase in the local option sales tax for unincorporated areas on the November ballot, saying additional revenue could support operations, capital improvements and safety.
The Education, Sports and Career & Technical Education Committee voted to forward a resolution urging the Fayette County Commission to place a proposed increase in the local option sales tax for unincorporated areas on the November general-election ballot.
Director of Schools Dr. Don McPherson said incorporated municipalities already levy the maximum local option sales tax and that an increase limited to unincorporated areas would generate additional revenue available for public education, school operations, capital improvements, instructional materials, technology, school safety and employee recruitment and retention. The proposed resolution authorized the Director of Schools and the Board chair to communicate the Board’s support to the County Commission.
Committee members approved forwarding the recommendation to the full Board (Motion: Kevin Powers; Second: Myles Wilson; Vote: 3–0). The recommendation will be considered by the full Board and, if supported, the Commission could place the measure before unincorporated-area voters in November.
