Decatur council approves $23,000 for Adams County Council on Aging transportation program

The City of Decatur Common Council on Tuesday approved a $23,000 contribution to the Adams County Council on Aging to support its Transportation Program.
Michelle Lengerich, director of Adams County’s Council on Aging, told the council that 60% to 70% of the program’s rides are for medical appointments. She said the program’s hours were expanded from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. to 6 a.m.–6 p.m. to accommodate riders who need transportation for work, that it operates seven vehicles with 11 drivers and hopes to hire more drivers.
Lengerich also reported fundraising progress for an update to the Senior Center Courtyard: about $50,000 raised toward a $95,000 goal. She requested $23,000 from the City’s 2027 budget to help cover ongoing program needs. Councilmember Matt Dyer moved to provide $23,000; Jenny Bowers-Shultz seconded and the motion carried.
The funding provides operating support for the transportation program and responds to the council’s stated interest in keeping seniors mobile for health care and work. The council did not attach conditions beyond the appropriation vote; next fiscal steps will be reflected in the 2027 budget process.
