Boys & Girls Club asks school board for formal bus contract after driver medical leave

Madison Miller, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, asked the Board of Trustees to approve a formal contract for student transportation for the 2026–27 school year, saying the club has depended on district-provided transfer busing since its driver went on medical leave.

Miller told the board she met with district staff about a potential contract and that, in recent years, the club has routed students from Westside to its site near Central School. "This past school year... the school district has been providing busing free of charge," Miller said, adding that daily riders on the transfer run ranged from 18 to 48 students and that the club’s bus can carry about 55 when full.

Why it matters: Miller said a contract would give the club a predictable cost and reliable service while it continues to recruit drivers. Board members and staff discussed the route’s current transfer arrangement, student fees for the transfer bus, and whether the district could support a dedicated route or a paid contract with the club.

Board feedback and next steps: District staff said they had only just met with club representatives and did not have a finalized plan for the board to approve at the meeting; the staff committed to return with details in August. Board members asked about capacity and confirmed the transfer bus is commonly used for pickups at Westside that continue to Central and the high school. Miller said the club hopes to formalize a contract so it can pay the district and not depend on ad hoc arrangements.

The matter remains in the discussion phase; staff will present a contract proposal and cost details at a future meeting.
