The Denton Parks and Recreation Board voted to hold its first official town 5K on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 8:00 a.m., charging $30 per runner and soliciting sponsors and in-kind contributions to cover costs. Committee member (speaker 4), who made the motion, said the package would include a shirt, a medal and timing for runners; members approved the motion by voice vote.
The board set sponsorship tiers to help underwrite the event: platinum $1,000, gold $500, silver $250 and bronze $100. Members discussed in-kind sponsorships — for example, asking a local vendor to supply shirts or banners in exchange for recognition — and agreed to limit the number of sponsor logos on the race shirt. “If we get a 100 people and we charge $30 a person…that gives you the $3,000,” the Chair (speaker 1) said while explaining the basic revenue math.
Board members also discussed a summer band series that would run across three weekends and estimated the cost at about $15,000 for professional acts. Members directed staff to obtain a list of available bands and confirm availability and deposits before committing to the full series, noting that some acts may already be booked in neighboring towns.
The motion to create the 5K included a commitment to seek sponsorships first rather than immediately tapping the board’s current event balance. Committee members asked staff to circulate band options by the next meeting and to set up group text/email communication for faster follow-up.
What happens next: staff will circulate the band list, begin sponsor outreach and post event details online; the board will revisit budget needs and deposits at upcoming meetings if sponsorships and in‑kind donations do not cover costs.
