Committee approves whistleblower policy replacement and advances Section 5000 student policy revisions

The committee approved the Office of Accountability and Efficiency's recommendation to replace Administrative Policy 6.35 (whistleblower protection) in its entirety with NEOLA model language. Matt Chasen (OAE) said the NEOLA language is simpler and better aligned with the district’s governance and escalation structures; Director O'Halloran moved the replacement and the roll call registered four ayes and the motion passed.
The committee then considered a work session on policies in Section 5000 (students). Office of Board Governance noted a request to withdraw drafts of policies 5.136 (personal communications devices), 5.200 (attendance), 5410/5411 (promotion/retention) and 5.850 (social events) for further discussion with union partners. The committee voted to approve the remainder of the Section 5000 draft policies and the motion passed by a unanimous recorded vote.
Several committee members and administration discussed where quarterly and annual reporting related to other agenda items (for example, SRO reporting and evaluation) should be placed; administration said audit and AFP channels could provide baseline reporting and that FACE could be used for school climate information. The meeting concluded with no further business and adjournment.
