Library volunteers announce Oct. 4 fundraiser; parks, pool and staffing updates presented

A representative of the Friends of the Spruce Pinehill Library used public comment at the Sept. 9 meeting to announce a community fundraiser called a "classic evening" on Oct. 4 that will kick off a weeklong library book sale and asked staff and the county manager to note the event.

Council and staff updates covered parks and pools: the board approved string lights for a downtown pocket park but declined more expensive dark-sky-compliant fixtures at approximately $16,000; the splash pad has been shut down for the season and staff will upgrade the feed line to thicker pipe over the fall and winter. The cooler pool had two rentals in August and staff plans to winterize and shut down pool plumbing later this fall.

Staff announced the hiring of a full-time employee, Kyle Patrick, to assist parks operations and noted upcoming staffing transitions as several long-time employees scale back or leave after completing degrees. Public-safety staff also told the council that eight patrol cars will have in-car camera systems installed this week and that two detective vehicles were recently purchased.

Why it matters: The fundraiser and book sale are community events; lighting and staffing decisions affect downtown ambience and park operations. Staff emphasized that maintenance tasks (knotweed control, restroom conversions, and inventory tagging) are ongoing and part of seasonal duties.
