Members of the Southbridge School Committee spent a portion of the July 14 meeting discussing priorities for the 2026–27 year, focusing on family engagement, governance training and meeting logistics.
Member Stephanie Rivers proposed inviting about 20 community organizations that staffed tables at the town’s Family Fun Day to give short, recorded 5–10 minute presentations to the committee in September so the resources could be recorded and shared on the district’s YouTube channel. Rivers said she had compiled a contact spreadsheet and shared it with committee members.
Committee members discussed reinstating subcommittees, appointing chairs at the next meeting, and considering a dedicated secretary role to handle roll call and official records. Members clarified that the secretary role would include roll call and other procedural functions beyond note-taking.
The committee debated meeting frequency and settled on the phrasing “twice a month” to avoid the ambiguity of "bimonthly." Members agreed to consider returning to a twice-monthly schedule and to finalize details at a future meeting.
On professional development, the chair noted there is $4,500 earmarked in the committee’s budget for conferences and trainings; members were asked to indicate interest in MASC and other conferences so the chair could plan allocations. The chair also mentioned a potentially transferable free MASC ticket that could cover one attendee.
Other community events and partnerships were highlighted: a district back-to-school event on Aug. 22 (free backpacks, haircuts, and food) and a free art-therapy program for youth ages 11–18 organized with local partners.
The committee agreed to follow up on subcommittee assignments, finalize meeting cadence, and collect conference attendance requests as part of budget planning before the fall cycle.
(Reporting note: where timing and exact transferability of conference tickets were discussed, committee members described contingency arrangements and possible transfer rules subject to conference organizers.)
