Eagle Scout project to add sensory and sound walls at Charlotte Ave Elementary approved

Dylan Cormier, an Eagle Scout candidate with Troop 19, presented a proposal to install a weatherproof sound wall and an adjacent sensory wall in the newly added courtyard at Charlotte Ave Elementary School. He told the Finance and Operations Committee on Oct. 7 that the walls will include PVC pipes of varying lengths for tonal play, bells and percussion elements, textured panels and steering-wheel–style components to provide tactile and auditory options for students with intensive needs.

Cormier said the walls will be freestanding, with posts set 4 feet into the ground to extend below the frost line, and that the project includes a small freestanding roof to protect the panels from rain and snow. He told the committee the materials will be weather-rated and stained for longevity and that removable pieces will be stored in a labeled bag so teachers can manage items brought inside. He said he will fundraise for materials and bring troop volunteers to do the work, and asked the district for a signature to show Eagle board approval.

Committee members asked about placement, safety and construction details, including DigSafe checks for utilities and the potential for blocking egress. Cormier said the structures will not be attached to the building and will be sited to avoid doorways and active classrooms. Staff noted the district would oversee long-term maintenance if needed and that the chosen materials and installation methods are intended to minimize upkeep.

After questions, the Chair moved to accept the Eagle project “as presented.” The motion was seconded and the committee voiced its approval; staff agreed to provide the signature Cormier needs to obtain final Eagle board approval.

Cormier said he will coordinate with the principal and the district contact provided by staff to finalize siting, obtain DigSafe clearance and schedule volunteer work once the Eagle board approves the project.
