Grottoes council discusses recreation center feasibility, event participation and streetlight upgrades

Council members discussed parks, recreation and town events and urged the council to prioritize a feasibility study for a potential indoor recreation center.

One council member asked that the FY27 budget include a feasibility study for a recreation center on land purchased nearly two decades ago, suggesting a steel building could provide year‑round space for seniors and youth, a basketball court and gym amenities. "I would like to see us come up with some kind of plan to design a center... put the plan together so we can see it," the council member said, asking staff to include the study in the budget process.

Committee chairs asked council members to participate in town events to reduce staff and volunteer load. A committee chair listed major events — Memorial Day ceremony, Grottoes Granza, Senior Citizen lunch, first responder day, Veterans Day and the Christmas parade — and asked members to specify availability so volunteers can be organized.

Streetlights and smaller projects also came up: one council member recapped work already done on a lights upgrade (roughly $36,000 estimated total cost, about $10,000 already spent) and suggested using street funds to pay the remaining balance; he asked for the item to be placed on the next meeting agenda for a formal decision.

The Ruritans' Meet the Candidate night on Sept. 17 was announced for the fall election cycle; council members were encouraged to attend and speak with constituents.

Next steps: Council asked staff to include a rec‑center feasibility study in budget planning materials and to schedule funding decisions (such as the streetlight completion) for the next meeting. No formal votes were recorded at the retreat.
