Tony Soules and Jeff Smith presented a detailed facilities update July 13, outlining multiple active construction and renovation projects and near‑term readiness plans.
Tony Soules reviewed specific project statuses: conveyance paperwork for The Ponds Elementary is pending recordation; Summerville Elementary requires final Office of State Fire Marshal inspection and sod installation before opening; SunRail High School gym work started this week with contractor mobilization; Ashley Ridge High School fine‑arts rooms and a new weight room have temporary occupancy and are nearing final inspection; Oak Brook additions are complete with minor sidewalk work pending and a bidirectional antenna (BDA) permit awaiting OSF approval.
Jeff Smith reviewed system‑level construction and summer‑work impacts: extreme heat has delayed some exterior envelope and spray‑coating work, HVAC units have been installed at multiple campuses with startups and balancing planned, portable classroom utilities are being tied in (including a new electrical service line in one area), playgrounds and courtyards are nearing completion, and a bus maintenance facility is expected to be operational by late August. Smith said the team has prioritized temporary occupancies where safe to do so, and described coordination with the Office of State Fire Marshal and local fire marshals for BDA and temporary occupancy approvals.
The board thanked facilities staff for their work and asked for a pre‑school opening walkthrough of finished projects. Members noted the scope of summer activity and how logistics (moving portables whole, traffic control) were managed.
On staffing and operational readiness, district leaders reported about 14 certified vacancies, 26 classified vacancies (including eight special education openings), approximately 161 full‑time bus drivers (including five bench drivers) and 15 part‑time substitute drivers; staff said routing improvements and a new road alignment have helped transportation operations as the district adjusts bell schedules to regain instructional minutes.
The board then approved an item to accept the student enrollment recommendations as presented. Board chair Dr. Wimberley called for the motion; Miss Powell moved, Mr. Farnsworth seconded, and the motion carried 7‑0.
Next steps: facilities staff will continue inspections and obtain permits (BDA/OSF) required for final occupancy; the board requested a site visit before school starts and district staff will continue finalizing staffing and routing ahead of the opening.
