Dexter Consolidated Schools board approves policy updates, meal-price rise and capital purchases

The Dexter Consolidated Schools Board of Education approved a slate of routine but consequential actions at its regular meeting, voting unanimously to adopt updated policies, raise the adult meal price and authorize a set of contracts and capital purchases.

The board approved multiple policy advisories, including Policy Advisory 273 (employee assistance) and Policy Advisory 274 (publicright-to-know/IPRA) after staff said the changes align district rules with guidance from the Public Education Department and legal counsel. "We recommend that we would approve that to next meeting," the superintendent said while outlining the advisory changes. The board voted on the advisories by roll call; each passed with all members present voting aye.

Administrators told the board they needed to raise the adult meal price to $5.50 to match expected reimbursement changes from federal school nutrition programs; the current adult price is $5.25. "In order for us to be able to serve any adult, we have to charge that amount plus the commodity value," the superintendent said. The board approved the price increase by unanimous roll call.

The board also approved a one-year extension of the district's milk contract, described in the packet as a renewal of the existing provider relationship. Administrators said the extension will not raise prices and praised the vendor's product and service. That motion passed unanimously.

On finance and facilities, the board approved June bills and payroll, budget adjustments (including federal special-education lines), and awarded an audit contract to JAG, the only firm to respond to the solicitation. The board authorized capital-outlay purchases paid for with designated funds, including the purchase of a Kubota tractor and the installation of a new freezer for district facilities; both motions passed unanimously.

Board members also approved two new board reimbursement forms (a meeting reimbursement form and a travel reimbursement/meal allotment form) and discussed how mileage will be handled: reimbursement will apply when a district vehicle is not available and drivers must sign an electronic consent form to be placed on the district's insurance roster.

In presentations, the superintendent previewed a redesigned public-facing board report and said the district will adopt Synergy as its student information system to standardize records and improve data transfer for IEPs. She also proposed a districtwide soft-skills initiative called the "Dexter Edge," modeled on Ron Clark practices, that will teach weekly skills from pre-K through grade 12 and culminate in a district competition adapted from the "Amazing Shake." "We're gonna call it the Dexter Edge," the superintendent said, describing weekly skill progressions and community involvement as judges.

Human resources reported multiple new hires (including teachers, a speech-language pathologist and activity coaches) and several resignations; administrators described plans to rebuild the band program using community members where appropriate. Staff also confirmed upcoming dates: a staff swim party (July 30), back-to-school staff breakfast (July 31), student start dates (Aug. 3 for grades 1—12; Aug. 5 for pre-K and kindergarten) and a strategic-plan presentation scheduled before the Aug. 10 board meeting.

The meeting closed after the board approved the agenda, minutes from prior meetings, and adjourned by unanimous roll call. Remaining policy readings and any typographical corrections were set for homework and follow-up ahead of the next meeting.
